    France had been expanding in North America and because of this the French often had skirmishes with English soldiers. Although battles and wars had been a conflict between France and England for years this war in North America lasted for seven years and left France banckrupt and defeated.

    Because France was banckrupt and had terrible leadership the king's financial adviser urged him to call a meeting of the three classes to discuss what to do. This did not end well because the first two estates out numbered the third estate considerably.     A few days later when the third assembly returned to the meeting room they found that the king had locked them out. The new National Assembly was forced to meet in some other place. The place they chose was a neaby tennis court. There the National Assembly swore to make a document that would protect the rights of the people and to keep meeting until this document was complete.     The people of Paris heard a rumor that the king was planing an attack on Paris to get rid of this new assembly. The people were not going to let themselves be slaughtered so they raided shopes and stole muskets and other weapons, but discovered that they did not have powder enough to arm their weapons but they knew where to get some. The Bastille was a fortress prison where gun powder and amunition was kept. The people stormed the fortess, killing and doing what they wanted and tore itapart.note

By a contitutional monarchy the king was forced to sign more and more of his power to the revolutionaries. The king had had enough and decided to escape to Belium by way of the royal coach.
