The Directory was governed by five "directors" and it was in power from 1975 until 1799. They came after the Reign of Terror when France was in a weak spot. -

Napoleon Overthrows Directory in Coup D'etat, Establishes Consulate
Napoleon overthrew the Directory government in a peaceful, bloodless coup d'etat. They were starting to lose power because of corruption and loss of political and economic power, which is why it was a peaceful coup.
