    Phase 1: The Creation of a New Government

    The government is radically changed in France. Monarchy is Abolished.
  • The Oath of the Tennis Court is sworn.

    The Third Estate, after being locked out of the Estates General, hold a meeting in an indoor Tennis Court, and vow to not disband untill a new constitution is written.
  • The Storming of the Bastille Occurs

    There is unrest in the lower class of Paris due to economic troubles. As the king begins to move armies to Paris to prevent a revolt, the people storm Bastille, a prison, in order to get weapons. They are successful and take control of Paris
  • Peasant Uprising in the Countryside

    Inspired by the successful uprising in Paris, the peasents in the countryside begin to overthrow the controlling nobility and end the serfdom and fuedal practices. The National Assembly abolishes fuedal privileges.
  • The Declaration of the Rights of Man

    The National Assembly issues the Declaration of the Rights of Man, which decrees that all men are equal in rights.
  • Women March on Versailles

    An angry mob of women march on Versailles, and force the King and Queen to return to Paris.
  • Louis XVI Accepts a Constitutional Monarchy

    The French Nobility was abolished as a legal order, and a constitution was written to establish the Constitutional Monarchy in France
  • Royal Family attempts to flee France

    Louis XVI and Marie Antionette are arrested attempting to flee France. This causes a massive distrust in the French Monarchy
  • France Declares War on Austria

    In an attempt to end tyranny, France declares war on Austria. Nothing is accomplished by this.
  • Parisian Mob takes Louis XVI prisoner.

    Rumors of treason by the king cause an uprising in Paris. Louis flees to the new Legislative Assembly, who take him prisoner.
  • National Convention abolishes monarchy

    Monarchy is abolished in France. France is declared a republic.
  • Louis XVI is executed

    Louis XVI is decapitated on the guillotine for treason

    Phase 2: The Reign of Terror

    Robespierre rules by imprisoning or executing all who speak out against him. There is widespread fear.
    France experiences a dictatorship under the Committee of Public Safety.
  • Political struggle between parties

    There is massive politcal struggle between the Girondists and the Mountain. The Mountain is successful due to the support of the Sans culottes.
  • Robespierre forms the Committee of Public Safety

    Robespierre and the Mountain form the Committee of Public Safety, which rules with dictatorial power and arrests Girondist leaders.
  • Thermidorian Reaction

    The French execute Robespierre, and another constitution is written. The Directory is formed.

    Phase 3: The Rule of the Directory

    The Directory controls France under a weak dictatorship.

    Phase 4: The rule of Napoleon

    Napoleon has control of France.
  • Napoleon's Coup D'Etat

    Napoleon Bonaparte takes control of the government. His new constitution is overwhelmingly approved.

    The Successful Napoleonic Wars

    France expansion is extremely successful
  • Napoleon crowns himself emperor.

  • Napoleon Invades Russia. Fails Miserably.

    Napoleon invades Russia with a massive army. They are defeated by the Russian Winter.
  • Napoleon is exiled

    Napoleon loses his throne and is exiled to the island of Elba.
