    Louis the XVI calls a meeting of the Estates General
    The Estates-General of 1789 was the first meeting since 1614 of the French Estates-General. The Estates General comprised of First Estate (clergy), Second Estate (the nobles) and the Third Estate ( the common people). At this meeting Louis XVI planned to persuade the Estates to approve new taxes but it was demolished when The Third Estate declared themselves as the only group that representated the nation.

    The Tennis Court Oath/ creation of the National Assembly
    The National Assembly, also known as the Third Estate, was comprised of nobles, clergy and common people. They were not invited to the regular meeting place by King Louis XVI so they met instead at a nearby indoor tennis court. In this place they pledged and vowed to create a better constitution for France. The members of this assembly believed that ignorance or disrespect for the Rights of Man is the only cause for public tension and corrupted goverment.

    The creation of the Declaration of the Rights of the Man and of Citizens
    The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citzens consists of:

    • All citizens are born free with equal rights
    • All citizens are allwowed to participate in electing representatives
    • All citzens are entitled to freedom of expression
    • Taxation will be related to wealth
    This declaration abolished the privileges and rights granted to the monarchy. It made France a secular republic where everyone was granted justice and equality.

    On March 20 1792, Guillotine was adopted as official means of execution. This was because the French people believed it was the easiest and quickest way of death. Also by choosing this method of execution, a sense of terror was established.

    Louis XVI, the king of France was killed by guillotine on 21 January 1793 at the Place de la Révolution in Paris. This event is significant because the execution of Louis XVI (symbol of monarchy) declared that the citizens of France ultimately refute the old system of government. Louis XVI was put on trial for treason, and was unanimously pronounced guilty.

    This was due to the counterrevolutionary rebellions in the west of France during the French Revolution. The first outbreak occured in 1793 in Vendée. This was a very religious community and weren't enthusiastic about the Revolution of 1789.

    The Reign of Terror (5 September 1793 – 28 July 1794) was a time period when violence occurred after the birth of the French Revolution which lasted for 11 months. In this time, the guillotine was created as a symbol of revolution.

    Marie Antoinette was also executed by guillotine, but only a few months after Louis. On October 16, 1793, Marie Antoinette was guillotine in front of public of France. The Convention put Marie Antoinette on trial for treason, and unanimously pronounced her guilty.
