  • Meeting of the Estates General

    Meeting of the Estates General
    A meeting with the 3 estates to approve new taxes on the 3rd estate. They were voting on new reforms, but the third estate got no say because the 1st and 2nd estae overpowered their vote. The thing is that, the king waited until the spring to meet the estates, and the 3rd estate had a bad winter because of the lack of food, causing the third estate to be mad at the king. The 3rd estate also wanted to change the voting process, which was unfair.
  • Creation of the National Assembly

    Creation of the National Assembly
    King Louis wanted to enforce rules, but the 3rd estate overpowed the 1st and 2nd estate, and rejected the rules the king enforced. The king then kicked the 3rd estate out. This cause the 3rd estate to meet up in a tennis court and make an oath saying that they wouldnt leave until they wrote a constitution for France. After this, Louis allowed each representative to have a vote.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    Storming of the Bastille
    Losuis ordered troops to Paris and Versailles in case he needed to preserve the monarchy by force. The National Assembly feared that the king would use violence to end their meeting. The National Assembly armed themselves. This caused a mob of Parsians to try and negotiate with the Bastille's commander for weapons. When the negotioations failed, the mob killed the commander and stuck his head on a long stick, and paraded through the streets
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen

    Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen
    This Declaration laid out the basic principles of the French Revolution: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. This was inspired from the English bill of rights, and the American Declaration of Independance, which says that all men are born equal. This allowed freedom of speech,the press, and religion. These rights didnt extend to women. Olympe de Gouges wrote a decleration for women, but the National Assembly turned it down.

    Creation of the National Convention
    This Event occured when the Legislative Assembly felt powerless because of the mob, so they decided to vote themselves out of existence. They called for the election of a new legislature, and the radicals, who favored extreme change, were put in control. The National Convention abolished the monarchy and declared France a republic. All members supported the revolution.
  • Execution of the King

    Execution of the King
    The Radicals were anxious to execute the king to prevent the return of a monarchy. When he was killed, a guard held up his head for all to see. News of his execution spread through Europe like a wildfire. After the Kings death, the National Convention set up the comittee of Public Safety to manage the army against foreign forces. They drafted all unmarried men who were between the age of 18 & 45. They also established the Revolutionary Tribunal, which rooted all who threatened the Revolution.

    Reign of Terror

    The countries outside France started a counterrevolution because they feared that France would lose control. The mountain began many accusations, trials, and executions, which feared the country. The city of Vendée resisted the revolution so much, that it led to a cival war. The Government eventually destroyed everyone and everything in Vendée. Anyone who had conncetions to the old order was in danger of being put on trial. Accused were forbidden to defend themselves and the Guillotine was used.
  • Coup d'etat

    Coup d'etat
    Armed supporters of Napoleon surrounded the directory legislature and forced members to turn the Government over to Napoleon, a forced transfer of power. The consulate would replace the directory as the Government of France. Members voted Napoleon as the first consul (the dictator).
