He moved into the political world after successful years of being a military general. He helped overthrow the weak Directory and replace it with a three man governing board known as the Consulate.

In his coronation as emperor of France, he invited the pope to preside over his coronation in Paris. However, during the ceremony he took the crown from the pope's hands; which meant that he owed his throne to no one but himself.

Napoleon prepared to invade England, but his plans were soon stopped in the Battle of Trafalgar. Fought off the southwest coast of Spain, British Admiral Horatio Nelson smashed the French fleet.

Napoleon continued his pursuit to dominate the world and did this by invading France. However, a chain of events there lead to his downfall. Napoleon's final defeat brought an end to the era of the French Revolution.

After Napoleon’s departure, things didn’t go so well in France. The people were afraid that they would return to the old regime. Napoleon escaped from the island and was greeted in Paris with open hands and triumph.
