  • Decembrist Revolt

    Decembrist Revolt
    -Protest against Nicholas I's assumption of the throne -Group of officers assembled in Senate Square, refused to show allegiance to the Tsar. -Tsar tried to issue a parley, however, the man who was sent over to do so was shot, and a grenadier squad attempted to take over the Winter Palace.
  • Emancipation of the Serfs

    Emancipation of the Serfs
    -Took effect under the reign of Alexander II. -Emancipated serfs on private estates and households, more than 23 million people recieved freedom. -Mir: Conservative, self-governing and self-sufficient units scattered across the land.
  • Revolution of 1905/Bloody Sunday

    Revolution of 1905/Bloody Sunday
    • People organized a demonstration to deliver a petition to the Tsar Nicholas II, stating reforms that they wanted.
    • Demonstration was organzied and led by Father Gapon, a Russian Orthodox priest.
    • Army pickets fired warning shots, then fired directly into the crowd. Estimates around 1000 injured or wounded.

    • Rasputin advised Tsar Nicholas to not go to war, said Russia would be defeated.
    • Russian army was weakened by military disasters.
    • Nicholas II spent much time on the Eastern Front, leaving Alexandra to control the cities under the influence of Rasputin.

    • Resulted in the end of the Romanov dynasty and Russian empire.
    • Resulted from autocratic political structure, technological backwardness, and an outdated and disorganized army.
    • Led to abdication of Tsar Nicholas II.
  • Tsar Nicholas Abdicates

    Tsar Nicholas Abdicates
    • Renounced the throne in agreement with the Duma.
    • Named Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich as his successor.
    • The order of Russia was breaking down, he felt he had to abdicate.
  • Bolshevik Revolution

    Bolshevik Revolution
    • Became the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, came to power during the October Revolution.
    • Founded by Vladimir Lenin, they considered themselves the revolutionary working class of Russia.
    • Lead by Leon Trotsky.
  • Rasputin Murdered

    Rasputin Murdered
    • Seen as a dark force ruining Russia, because he had such a great influence over the Tsarina Alexandra.
    • Russian aristocrats planned to kill him. They laced his food and drink with cyanide, but he did not die. They tried shooting him, beating him, etc. but he would not die.
    • He finally died from drowning after he was tied up and thrown into a lake.
  • Murder of the Romanovs

    Murder of the Romanovs
    • On the 16th of July, the family and 4 of their servants were herded together and held prisoner 850 East of Moscow.
    • Murdered savagely by Bolshevik captors.
    • When the bodies were first uncovered, the bodies of Alexei and Anastasia were found to be missing.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    • Treaty signed after WWI to end the state of war between Germany and the Allies.
    • Required Germany to accept responsibility for causing the war.
    • Also required them to pay $31.4 billion in reparations.
  • Stalin takes power/Death of Trotsky

    Stalin takes power/Death of Trotsky
    • Stalin gained more power by putting down Trotsky.
    • Trotsky was eventually exiled from the Soviet Union.
    • Trotsky was then killed by Stalinist assassins (killed in Mexico with an ice axe).
  • Lenin Dies/USSR formed

    Lenin Dies/USSR formed
    • USSR stood for Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
    • Single party political system dominated by the Communist party.
    • After WWII, it emerged as one of two of the world's superpowers.
