    • 200,000 people approached the palace Czar's Palace, demanding changes to increase their quality of life with a petition
    • The people came in peace and were dressed nicely
    • Soldiers fired upon the Citizens, 1,000 were killed, many were wounded
    • Made people around the country rise up against the Czarist government, going on strikes and causing disorder

    Russia's participation in WW1

    • Russia was not able to support its army economically
    • The army had weak generals and were poorly equipped
    • Prices inflated making the working class beg for WW1 to end
  • Assassination of Rasputin

    • Rasputin gained lots of power while Czar Nicholas went to the front line, which made many fear his power in the government
    • Nobles decided to kill him, and less than 1 1/2 years later, the Czar's entire family and himself were assassinated by revolutionaries
  • Abdication of Czar Nicholas II/establishment of Provisional Government(March 1917)

    • The temporary provisional government is created by leaders of the Duma, and led by alexander Kerensky
    • It contained moderates who wanted a constitutional monarchy
    • People's demands to the Provisional Government were not met, making them even less content with the way they were being ruled
  • Rise of Lenin and Bolshevik revolution

    • The Germans arrange Lenin's return to Russia, predicting that he would cause unrest and hurt Russian war efforts
    • Lenin and the Bolsheviks take over soviets in many major cities, gaining support
    • Red guards storm the Petrograd winter palace, and arrest leaders of the provisional government

    Red Army wins, and Russia is now under communist control.
    Russia is now in ruins, famine and death plagues the country

    • leaders of the Bolsheviks were scared that nationalism would lessen unity and party loyalty
    • Lenin then organizes Russia into self-governing republics under a central government
    • The Bolsheviks change their party name to the Communist party
    • They created a constitution based on socialist and democratic principles, but in reality, the party held all the power
    • The U.S.S.R was led by Joseph Stalin and the communist party after Lenin died

    Stalin's rise to power

    1. Stalin moved his supporters to powerful political positions
    2. Stalin gains total control of the Communist party
    3. He exiles Leon Trotsky and becomes dictator
  • Lenin's death

    • This created competition on who would rule next, between Joseph Stalin, and Leon Trotsky
    • Lenin stated that Stalin was a dangerous man, and that he had lots of power that he didn't trust him with
  • Leon Trotsky gets exiled

    This gave Joseph Stalin a clear path to becoming the next ruler of the Communist leader. Stalin later makes himself the dictator.
