    He was the ruler of Russia before the Russian revolution and WWI. After he died his son, Nicholas, took over and people weren't happy with the way either ruled which set the stage for the revolution.

    The son of Alexander, he and his entire family murdered by Bolsheviks after the March Revolution, significant as he was the last Russian emperor and he ruled very similarly to his father as they both wanted total power; the revolution started during his reign proving that he upset his people enough for them to revolt

    Russo - Japanese War

    Russia and Japan were fighting over territory in China, Japan won as they had more supplies and naval forces. Significant as it led to Nicholas setting up the Duma and it was another reason the Russians were mad at Nicholas because they were embarrassed which is another reason they revolted.

    As a response the upset people, Nicholas established the duma which was supposed to be similar to congress or parliament. However it was significant as Nicholas gave them no real power adding to the list of reasons to revolt.
  • Bloody Sunday

    When 200,000+ Russians marched on Czars Winter Palace because they were frustrated and wanted relief from living and working conditions and to show the Czar how he has upset the country. While this was meant to be a peaceful event (why it was on sunday - a day of rest) it ended up being violent as the Czar wasn't there the police decided to open fire and killed over 100 people. Proving to be significant as it was another reason people disproved of the Czar and revolted.

    Russian participation in WWI

    The Russians fought in WW1 with the Allies however they were only prepared for six months of war. Russia also hadn't finished industrializing therefore they didn't have a steady form of transportation to supply soldiers with food and ammunition. After the treaty of Brest Litovsk was signed Russia had to back out of the war early. Russians were upset and because they were still industrializing and they had tough living and working conditions, adding to the reasons to revolt.

    Rasputin was thought of as a healer and the royal family needed him as their only son and heir to the throne had a blood disease. People thought he was influencing the Czar and nobles assassinated him by attempting to poison him and they shooting him and throwing him in a lake. Rasputin was significant as he was another reason the Russians wanted to revolt as people thought he was influencing the Czar.

    abdication of Czar Nicholas II/ establishment of Provisional Government: The Bolshevik or communist party overthrew the government. It was significant as it ended the rule of the royal family.

    The October Revolution is when the Bolsheviks overthrow the provisional government. As a result the Cheka and Red army are established which eventually led to the Civil war.

    Civil War

    When the Bolsheviks (Red Army) fought the White army (anti - Bolsheviks, conservatives and Allies). The red army wanted to protect the revolution and the white army wanted to stop communism. The red army won but the war was significant as it added to the devastation that Russia was already facing as peasants had to sell their grain by a price determined by the government and in total 14 million people were killed. Since the Red army won they were able to establish the soviet union with Lenin.
  • Establishment of Soviet Union

    After the red army won the civil war, the soviet union or USSR was established by Lenin and the communist party. This establishment was significant in correlation to Stalin's rise of power as he took over after Lenin died.
  • Lenin's Death

    Lenin died in 1924 and it was significant as two there were two people competing to replace him, Trotsky and Joseph Stalin. Lenin's choice was Trotsky as he believed Stalin was too focused on power. However Stalin won and had Trotsky banished from the Soviet Union.

    Stalin's rise to power

    Stalin won the competition between him and Trotsky for the replacement of Lenin and ruled the Union as a dictator. He didn't feel secure enough even after he banished Trotsky from the Soviet Union. People believe that Trotsky's assassination by a spanish communist is somehow tied back to Stalin.

    After Stalin won the competition between him and Trotsky, he banished Trotsky from the Soviet Union as Stalin didn't feel secure enough and even as Trotsky was found thousands of miles away in Mexico. Leon Trotsky's exile was significant as Stalin continued on to rule as a dictator.
