This town was built by Charles Stillman, They turned South Texas into a land of profit-oriented ranching and commerce. Once the mexican war ended, he bought a ,massive grant north of the river and established a town at Fort Brown opposite Matamoros. The land he called Brownsville. Stillman then bought all of the surplus ferries and river boats form the United States, creating a monopoly on transportation in the area. Stillman's successes put him on the road to becoming one of the wealthiest men.
