While European traders and fisherman had visited the shores of the future Acadia before 1604, the French presence was established by a group of explorers and buisnessmen, including Samuel de Champlain. These figures spent the winter in Acadia, at the mouth of the Saint Croîx River.

The decision has been made, however the expulsion of the Acadians has only just begun. Thousands of the Acadians were killed and deported to other places.

All the Acadians who fled to other places before the deportation were rounded up and sent to France.
