    The first Catholics came to Australia as a part of the first fleet, these people where mostly Irish convicts.

    From 1803 to march 1804, when the Castle Hill rebellion terrified The King so much that he withdrew all of Dixon's privileges. Dixon returned to Ireland soon after and the Mass was never legally celebrated again, in the colony until Fathers John Joseph Therry and Philip Connolly, chaplains appointed by the Government in London, arrived in 1820.

    Catholic schools were first built in the early nineteenth century but neither of the schools were able to survived very long, and it wasn't until Therry and Connolly arrived in 1820 and significant development was finally able to take place.

    Tenison Woods and Mary MacKillop are now recognised as Australia's first saints. By 1871, these sisters were running up to thirty-five schools in the Adelaide.

    Between 1872 and 1893 every State in Australia had passed a Education Act which meant removing state aid to Church schools. This was a bad stage for Catholic schools and for the Catholic community in Australia. Bishops and people decided to persevere with the Catholic system. With no money to pay teachers, the bishops turned to the religious orders in Ireland and other European countries and soon after religious sisters and brothers were responding to the call for help.

    By 1880 there were a total of 815 sisters from all orders were teaching in all of the different schools and by 1910 the number started to rise to 5000. The sisters were not only able to set up schools in the cities but also established little parish schools all around Australia, which provided a Catholic education for many kids.

    During the 1950s the numbers or catholic grew rapidly which increased the number of Catholics in Australia, because of this there were many new parishes that were built in order to send all of the Catholics to catholic schools.

    The Second Vatican Council which was also known as the Vatican the second, was the most significant twentieth century event in the Catholic Church. Held in Rome from 1962 to 1965, the Council was made up of the Pope at first John 12th and after his death in 1963 Paul the sixth and all the different bishops from around the world.
