The latent mind

Q7.

  • Reviewing

    Reviewing
when we reviewed our footage we realised that some shots were out of focus and also the white balance (even though we liked the bright light illusion it created-almost like a dream state), we also discovered that we would have to do a reshoot and not use some footage as it didn't link well.
  • Preliminary storyboard

    Preliminary storyboard
For our prelim we had to plan a short sequence, so we constructed a storyboard in order to show our ideas in a structure.
  • Preliminary excercise groups

The preliminary excercise groups were formed and within that we delegated roles; Jess was director/2nd actor, Patrick was cameraman and i was the 1st actor, we delegated the roles as to who would feel the most comfortable and who had previous experience fulfilling these roles.
  • Planning

We all individually went away and came up with ideas, relatable to other thriller films, then we collectively voiced our ideas together; all of our ideas were then written down, where we picked and chose specific elements from eachothers to form our end idea
  • Working in a group

Working in a group was very rewarding as aswell as your own ideas you had an equal amount of ideas from others within the group, it also made it much easier to realise if a suggestion would work or not
  • Period: to

    Q7.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
  • Group work

In some ways working in a group was challenging, as each person had their individual ideas which they thought were the best, therefore there would sometimes be conflict deciding which elements we should use, also there would sometimes be a lack in effort or contribution.
  • Preliminary excercise: Introduction

The preliminary excercise was the first initial introduction into the 180 rule, match on action, shot reverse shot, it was a way we had to make sure our prelim included these aspects and that they worked, in order to create a smooth flow of continuity. It also provided information on how to create a different sense using the camera.
  • New To Filming

Being new to filming made it difficult at first to get used to all the different concepts involved with filming and editing, however once we started to plan and went out and practiced these different skills, through practising gave a first hand view and perspective, in which allowed us to develop our understanding after completing (editing) and viewing the footage, gave a real understanding on how different techniques affect the footage.
  • Prelim excercise

Overall this process went well, our footage/end result portrayed the structure of our storyboard with a few changes; as some shots weren't working when we got into the editing suite, also some had glitches or cut off, we also gave ourselves enough time to film everything exactly how we wanted with extra shots for just in case. The match on action worked really well, the cuts between shots weren't noticeable and we achieved a smooth flow of continuity.
  • Group work/delegation/planning/storyboard

Aswell as learning different concepts and techniques, i had to learn/develop my group work skills in order for their to be correct co-operation and equality, also we needed to make sure everyone was happy with the delegated roles and could perform them to their best ability, also to give everyone a chance of different roles they might not have performed before. Planning was crucial in providing a set structure which we could follow on the day of production as we had a set time spam.
  • Overall

Overall i learnt alot of skills and techniques from this excercise which enable me to contribute my understanding towards our opening title sequence, the 180 rule was something we continued to work on for our opening title sequence, so the previous experienced helped alot when executing this conept.
  • Planning, OTS

Due to the knowledge gained from the preliminary excercise, when planning for our opening title sequence there was a change in how it was presented, using mise-en-scene and cinematography aspects, aswell as more technical features, making it way more simple to convert from plan to product.
  • Useful

The planning ended up being crucial to filming, as it set specific tasks and goals to reflect in our footage. Storyboarding set a clear formation/guideline for us to follow, costume and prop ideas enabled us to form target audience profiles, and the charecteristics of our characters, the shot lists provided us with a restiction on where we could film and how long the footage could be.
  • Film day

    Film day
I felt fully prepared on the filming day, and felt confident that we knew how to reflect the continuity and variety of shots to our best ability making it effective, i think these are shown in the shots where the female is seen in the staircase whilst shots of flashbacks are being shown, however i think we reflect continuity as after each flashback she returns in the similar position as she was found; stating that there has been no time change.
  • Film day

    Film day
The shots i am most proud of are the ones of the main character in the stairwell, this is because they are filmed clear and well and also set up the whole narrative for the flashbacks, it's also a very clear way to indicate the females mental health and to relay a state of confusion between reality and fantasy.
  • match on action and 180 degree rule

match on action and 180 degree rule
We used match on action when shot of the characters hands and wedding ring is shown, this was particulary to enhance the fact of their broken down marriage, and to put focus on the wedding ring as it's a main factor to the narrative
  • Reshoot

    Reshoot
We decided a reshoot was in order to portray the medical theme as we weren't granted permission to film outside the hospital, we planned the reshoot and prepared all the props in advance, there were no problems that occured and it came out as an effective way of hinting at a medical theme.
  • Editing

The experience with the preliminary excercise was much easier as we had specific guidelines to follow and the sequence was more shorter, whereas the OTS we had to decide on font, music, foley sounds, titles, cuts, but then again from doing the prelim made me aware of how to edit the OTS, there was also alot more creative input in the OTS
  • Overall OTS

    Overall OTS
Overall i think our product is successful in taking particular typical thriller aspects with the medical hybrid and creating a realistic/effective opening title sequence, however if we were to o it again i'd make sure all the shots were in focus, and that the lighting represented a thriller-esque portrayal.
  • Overall experience

    Overall experience
i feel i have gained a lot of knowledge and understand of the different aspects which contribute to the thriller genre, i have developed my previous editing skills with use of the software on the macs in the editing suite, i have also learnt about the different types of advertising between independent and mainstream films and how different film companies produce different styles of work.
