The Project Mercury program starts in 1958. It becomes the United States first man-in-space program.They had 2 goals: putting a human in orbit around the Earth, and doing it before the Soviet Union, as part of the early space race. It succeeded in the first but not the second. -
A monkey Sam was sent into space on December 4, 1959 on Little Joe (4). This mission was successful with a weightless time of 3 minutes and 13 seconds.
