    It is one of the oldest police departments in the US.

    It was established in 1894, which investigated corruption in the NYPD.

  • Theodore Roosevelt

    He was president of the NYPD Police Commission who had a great leadership. A lot of refoms had been instituted by him.

  • First black officer

    Samuel Battle became the first black officer hired by the NYPD.

  • The first female officer

    Isabella Goodwin was one of female police officers and became the first female detective in New York City.

  • Mario Biaggi

    He was the first police officer in New York and selected the National Police Officers Hall of Frame.

  • The economic downturn

    There was widespread damage the city during 1970s because of the bad situation. One of main crimes was arson so the police had to deal with it many times.

  • Drug Markets on the street

    During 1980s, the police had been monitoring its crime which had a negative effect on society.

  • Tracking crime geographically

    They developed the computer system called CompStat, which is now very useful for tracking crime. Also, it is now used not only the U.S. but also Canada

  • September 11 attacks

    After that, the NYPD Counter-Terrorism Bureau was established in 2002. Its main role is to protect freedom and democracy against terrorists.
