    Battle of Marathon

    Persian Army wanted to defeat the Greek city-states that supported the uprisings in Ionia against the Persian Empire. The Athenian strategy was to keep the Persian army pinned down at Marathon, blocking both exits from the plain. Thus preventing themselves from being outmaneuvered. The Greeks won which marks the first battle of the Greco-Persian wars.

    480 BCE

    Battle of Thermopylae

    The Persian invasion of Greece was resumed by King Xerxes. A joint army of 6,000 and 7,000 Greek men was sent to defend the pass at Thermopylae.After three days of holding their own against the Persian king Xerxes I and his army,the Greeks were betrayed,and the Persians were able to outflank them.Sending the main army in retreat,Leonidas and a small contingent remained behind to resist the advance and were defeated.The Persians won and gained control of Phocis,Boeotia,and Attica .
  • Battle of Salamis

    Battle of Salamis

    Xerxes and his army had overrun much of Greece, and his navy of about 800 galleys bottled up the smaller Greek fleet of about 370 triremes in the Saronic Gulf.Themistocles, then lured the Persian fleet into the narrow waters of the strait at Salamis, where the massed Persian ships had difficulty maneuvering. The Greek triremes then attacked furiously, ramming or sinking many Persian vessels.he Greeks sank about 300 Persian vessels while losing only about 40 of their own. Greeks won the battle.

    Delian League was founded in following the Persian War to be a military alliance against any enemies that might threaten Ionian Greeks. It was led most notably by Athens, who protected all members unable to protect themselves with its massive and powerful navy.
