  • Period: 1000 BCE to 505 BCE

    Formation Of Greek City States

    The formation of Greek city states began with the Mycenaean civilization. By 500 BC, many more civilizations would later form around the area in Greece. These city states are later going to be relevant to the Persian Wars because most city states choose either the Persian or Greek side in the war.
  • Period: 499 BCE to 449 BCE

    Golden Age

    The city of Athens had become very wealthy and powerful in result of Delian League after the Persian war. Athens economic prosperity had led up to the golden age of culture, which included theater and sculptures, philosophy and democracy, along with many other artistic features. The golden age had occurred between the peloponnesian wars and the Persian wars. (479 B.C.E-439 B.C.E)

    Persian wars

    The Persian empire emerged as a powerful empire around 550 B.C.E. With the capital being Persepolis, is it based in modern day Iran. The Persian empire also had tolerant rulers who controlled the large empire. They were tolerant because they let people practice whatever religion they chose to, they just had to pay tax to the emperor. Cyrus the great had conquered the Persian empire, but as he was such a tolerant ruler; he let the Hebrews return to their homeland.

    Golden Age

    He wouldn’t permit his soldiers to burn conquered cities. Cyrus the great had a son, who quickly was found to not be tolerant like his dad, he was overthrown quickly. Darius the great administered the empire efficiently by creating the royal road. (Soldiers could travel anywhere in the empire quickly) However he could NOT conquer Greece. The religion of the Persian empire was Zoroastrianism which was a monotheistic religion.

    Building Of Parthenon

    The Parthenon is a large temple built during Pericle's reign. The temple was built at a time of prosperity during Athen's golden age, to honor their god, Athena. The Parthenon is an example of how succesful Athen's Golden Age was and how they valued wealth, art, and their culture.

    Peloponessian war

    Peloponessian war was an ancient Greek war fought by the Delian leuge led by Athens against the Peloponnesian league led by Sparta.
  • Period: 408 BCE to 476 BCE

    Battle Of Salamis

    Athens knew Persia was making their way over to attack them with 25,000 soldiers. Athens positions their battle near the sea, where they are known to be good fighters. The Athenians drive the Persians into the sea for battle and defeat them. The Persians were not a well trained navy so the Athenians had outsmarted them by battling in the sea. This shows the cleverness of the Athenians and causes the Persians to surrender once again.
  • Period: 356 BCE to 323 BCE

    Alexander The Great

    After the Greek city states were weakened from the peloponnesian wars, Philip the second conquered Greece. Alexander the great was a well educated and trained military officer. He was tutored by philosopher Aristotle and had gone on many military ventures with his father. Alexander had conquered Greece and the Persian empire. He conquered Greece but died shortly after of Malaria.

    Hellenistic Culture

    Hellenistic culture was created by; Alexander the great empire combined the knowledge of four great empires. (Greece, Persia, Egypt and India). The combination of Greek and Eastern culture created a new culture known as Hellenistic. Alexandria Egypt was the most important city for Hellenistic culture. Is was known as the city of knowledge.
  • Period: 323 BCE to 31 BCE

    Hellenistic Culture

    The spread of Hellenistic culture brought out Astronomy, mathematics, physics and medicine. These all were changed over time and created a lot of what we use today. In medicine they believed in logic and not just the spirit of the Gods. In math they created the pythagorean theorem. In astronomy they discovered that planets revolved around the sun. In physics, they discovered the estimated value of P.i. All things we use today and that was because of the spread of hellenistic culture.
