This treaty was to keep peace with them and make everyone safe. Sep 4, 1841 Preemption Act of 1841 passed The preemption act of 1841 allowed people who have been using land to buy it cheap. 21 yrs, head of house hold, US citizen May 30, 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act passed This Act allowed people to settle in Kansas and Nebraska instead of just Indians. Period: 1861 to 1865 Civil War The war in the US on whether to keep slavery or get rid of it. It lasted for four May 20, 1862 Homestead Act passed The act that allowed you land if you took care of it for 5 years. Jul 1, 1862 The Charter for the Transcontinental Railroad passed They built railroad from Sacramento to Omaha. They get ten miles of land on each side when they keep going. Jul 2, 1862 Morrill Act passed This act gave the state land to sell and build colleges. Period: 1863 to 1869 Construction of the transcontinental railroad Building of Rail Road from Sacramento to Omaha. This is the reason they needed Kansas/ Nebraska land. Aug 8, 1864 Plum Creek Massacre Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Lakota Indians massacred by US near present day Lexington. This slowed down travel in the area. Nov 29, 1864 Sand Creek Massacre The US attacked Indians. They did this because the Indians had been attacking the settlers. Mar 1, 1867 Nebraska becomes a State The US wanted land to build a railroad on. They were allowed to pick if they wanted to be slave or free and they chose to be free. Apr 29, 1868 The first Treaty of Fort Laramie The US gave the Indians a place to live. THEY were only allowed to live there. 1892 The treaty in 1892 between the US government and the Lakota Tribe The treaty where the US got land from Lakota. They gave us a little bit of what is now Nebraska and the US gave them money.
