  • Estates General Called

    The Estates General of 1789 was a general assemly representing the French estates of the territory called by Louis XVI. he proposed solutions to France's financial problems, for new taxes, and also pointed to the start of the French Revolution.
  • National Assembly Formed

    During the French Revolution, the National Assembly was a group of people who wanted to make changes in France. They represented the regular people and asked the king to make sure everyone had enough food. They were important in the revolution.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    On June 20, finding themselves shut out of the usual assembly hall at Versailles and thinking the king was forcing them to disperse, they went to a nearby indoor tennis court where they swore never to leave until a written constitution for France was established . So the tennis court shows us that they took the oath to the national constitution and representation.
  • The Storming of the Bastille

    On 14 July 1789, a state prison on the east side of Paris, known as the Bastille, was attacked by an angry people. The prison had become a symbol of the monarchy's dictatorial rule, and the event became one of the defining moments in the Revolution that followed.
  • Constitutional Monarchy

    The Constitution of 1791 was created during the French Revolution. It replaced the king with a new government. The Constitution said that people couldn't directly choose their leaders. Instead, they elected people who then chose the leaders. This was a big change for France at that time.
  • France a Republic

    On September 21, 1792, it abolished the monarchy. It was the time when France declared itself a republic. A republic is a form of government in which the people elect the government, including the head of state.
  • Beheaded

    In 1793, Louis XVI was killed by a machine called the guillotine. Marie Antoinette also went through a trial and was found guilty of a serious crime called high treason. She was then executed using the guillotine too. During that year, because of pressure from the public, both Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette left Versailles and went to Paris. Sadly, they both died in 1793 by the guillotine.
  • Reign of Terror Begins

    The Treaty declared on September 5, 1793 that “terror is the order of the day” and it was decided that in order for the Revolution to succeed, the opponents of the Revolution must be removed, crushed and eliminated at that time.

    On July 27, 1794, Robespierre and his associates were arrested by the National Assembly. Robespierre was taken to the Luxembourg prison in Paris, but the jailer refused to arrest him, and he fled to the Hôtel de Ville.
