My Immagration time line (16 year old Irish girl)

  • Period: to

    New Immagrants erea

From when we disided we wanted to move to America, to how we were treated to how we live our current lives. Our immagration story.
  • Wealthy America

    Wealthy America
Things in Ireland were, ok. We couldn't have our own religion though and our leaders were not pleased when we wanted to learn and belive other religons. Other wise then the punishments if you wanted to do another religion everything was ok. When ever our family from America that got there during the famin here years ago they seemed comfy and America had freedom of religion. Our mom want to send us to America now. I hope it works out. I am excited though, We may get free land from some act.
  • Becoming American

    Becoming American
We just Arrived to Ellis Island. The ride here was horable, only if we had a bit more money we may have been able to aford a better trip here. But I suppose the important thing is that me and all my siblings made it in. I'm just glad Joshua came I bet if he wasn't here me and my younger sibilings would have to go home. We need to find some where to stay and we need to find jobs. I hope both me and Joshua find work. Still I worry about our younger sibings Rilly being 4 and Ivan at age 10.
  • Finding work

    Finding work
To get free land we need to get over to the west. That will coast money though we'll need suplies and trasportation and food and other nessisaritys. So today me and my older brother Joshua set out to find work. I found a job in a shop where we make clothes out of wool. Joshua got a job at some factory where all the women pluck chikens. My job has very poor pay, I'm sure if my brother worked here her would get better pay. Anyhow I hope Ivan can take care of Rilly untill we get back from our jobs.
  • Chienes exclution act

    Chienes exclution act
I resently heard of a new act going on here in America. It's called the Chines exclution act. I hope this does not effect me in any negative way. Even if I don't nessasaraly like the Chines women and men I do have some sympathy for them though. I can't immagin raising money to come here then being told we aren't allowed in America. I wounder if no Chines are ever allowed to come to America again.
  • Opertunities

    Opertunities
We finally raised enough money to movewest. We have it figured all out. Joshua will work on the railroads on the way to the west so we can pick up some extera money, and I'll take care of the house and Rilly and Ivan. I hope Joshua gets a job there it seems there are so many jobs on the railroad, so I hope he can get one.
  • Homestead Act

    Homestead Act
I was thinking of the reasons why our mom wanted us to come here so much. Yes she wanted us to have a wealthy life but there is more to it I belive. Ever since we came here we were wanted to own our own land. I was cleaning today and I ran into some interesting papers. They were saying how they were giving free land in the west for anyone willing to work on it for years. It didn't matter if you were male or female even slave, as long as you were 20 years and up you could have land made in 1862.
  • House work

    House work
Everyday Joshua leaves home early and comes back late from the railroad. He often says how hard his work is and how I'm lucky I work at home. How ridicules! He may be working hard but so am I. I have to cook for everyone of us, clean the house, and raise Ivan and Rilly. I would like to see him try and do what I do. I suppose I shouldn't be to mad at him though every day he comes home and seems to be doing worse and worse. He hasn't talked much about how things are going on the railroads.
  • Racisum

    Racisum
My brfother came home today clearly upset. I asked him what we wrong and he yelled at me saying how his job is horrable becuase of some of his worker treating him poorly because he's differant. Then he continued on by saying how I should mind my own bussness and do something productive. With that I left out the door crying. I found a tree and I sat there and though to my self. Why would they treat us like this, we never wronged them. What were they doing to Joshua? How long will it going on?
  • Our own land

    Our own land
Finally we have our own land. It coasted 18 dollars but we have our own land. My brother being over 23 years lets us have it. Noe Rilly is 10 and Ivan is 16 so they will now start helping with there share of the work around our new land.
  • Life as it is

    Life as it is
We've had our land for about a year now. Rilly has gotten very good at making meals. Even though Ivan is doing good in the feilds with Joshua he say he wants to become smarter. He says he wants to start a bussnes. Maybe some day that will happen, we did come to America after all. People are still racist to us, but we try to ignor it. I've had some male callers but I'm to busy to be in love. Well thats what I tell Rilly when she asks "Shanon, why don't you have a husband yet?"
