My Viewer Literacy

  • Joined J1

I took journalism my sophomore year and that was when I started learning about the Viewer.
  • Learned about AP style and how to write for the Viewer

In J1, we were taught about tons of style rules when writing for a newspaper that were different from the rules of writing for English class. It was a pretty steep learning curve as we had articles to turn in at the end of the month.
  • Failed Assignement

I received an assignment I didn't totally understand and didn't put effort into finishing. As a result, the editors that year had doubts about my ability to meet deadlines and be accountable.
  • Anaheim Retreat

Many of the editors along with a few writers took a trip to California to attend a journalism convention.
  • Became debates editor

In my first year as an editor, I became the debates page editor. I was devastated by this assignment as I had wanted to be a news editor.
  • Learned InDesign

InDesign is the software we use to design our pages and we spent our first week as editors learning this software. It is something we had to use all year and became better at with each issue.
  • Became online editor

Both current online editors were ready for a change so I stepped in and volunteered to serve as both online editor and the website manager.
  • Learned SNO

SNO is the server we use to design our website. When I took over as online publisher, I knew nothing about SNO and had to learn a lot of it on my own.
  • Learn how to publish on Issuu

Issuu is the website were we publish our print issues electronically. It's a very simple process but the first time around it seems very challenging and there are a lot of steps to remember.
  • Website Re-Vamp

I redesigned the layout of our website.
  • Viewer during COVID

For the last "issue" of the year, I had to learn how to be an EIC during COVID when communication was impossible. As a result, we posted almost nothing that last month of school
  • Became Online Editor In Chief

I became the EIC of the online Viewer and got to lead a team of 7 other dedicated online editors.
  • Took lessons about online newspapers

I spent 2 days during the summer attending online seminars about beat systems and how to promote an online mindset.
  • Facing COVID reality

I had so many plans of new project for the Viewer. I had hoped to implement a beat system, tons of multi-media projects, etc. but due to COVID, we had to simplify everything.
  • Our domain expired

Right as we were about to start this year, our website domain expired! It halted the publication and sharing of our freshman issue for almost a week.
