Eugene Talmadge died on December 1946. His death set off months of controversy.
-
In the summer of 1946, Eugene Talmadge was elected governor of Georgia. However, he died before his inauguration in January 1947. His supporters(who feared that this would happen) asked people to "write-in" Eugene's son's (Herman Talmadge) name on the ballot. So, when Eugene died, his supporters claimed Herman Talmadge as the governor, using the ballots as proof. Meanwhile, the luitenant governor claimed the title of governor and Arnall reefused to leave his post.
-
In March 1947 the Georgia Supreme Court ruled that Thompson( lieutenant governor) was the governor and that there would be a special election in September 1948. Herman Talmage won this election.
