He became king of France. Him and his descendants became known as the Capetians. They ruled for the next 300 years. Hugh only ruled an area called the Ile-da-France, while the feudal lords ruled the rest of France, these holding areas were known as duchies. The Capetians aimed to deveope a strong central government and do unite the duchies under a monarchy.
