  • Period: 2000 BCE to 600 BCE

    Pre-classic Period Part 1

    Farming villages formed and The Olmec civilization starts.The Mayans form larger places to live. Large buildings are built in and Mayans being to farm making their cities larger
  • Period: 600 BCE to 100 BCE

    Pre-classic Period Part 2

    Settlements at Tikal is formed,the first Mayan calendars are carved into stone.The Mayans decide to have kings. The city of Teotihuacan is made in the Valley of Mexico.
  • Period: 400 BCE to 600 BCE

    Classic Period Part 1

    Teotihuacan rules the Mayan highlands -400 AD. The city Tikal is defeated by other cities -560 AD. Teotihuacan stops and is no longer a cultural center- 600 AD.
  • Period: Apr 20, 600 to Apr 20, 900

    Classic Period Part 2

    The city Caracol becomes a major force. The southern cities collapse and Teotihuacan is abandoned. Archaeologist don’’t know why this happened as it is still a mystery.
  • Period: Apr 20, 925 to Apr 20, 1283

    Post-Classic Period Part 1

    Chichen Itza is the most powerful city and will rule for about two hundred years. After declining for years, Chichen Itza is abandoned( 1250 AD) The city Mayapan becomes the capital of Mayan civilization.
  • Period: Apr 20, 1441 to Apr 20, 1517

    Post-Classic Period Part 2

    The Mayans rebel against the rule of Mayapan.The city is abandoned by the late 1400s.
    As the Spanish arrive the Post Classic Period ends.

    Hernan Cortes arrives near the Mayans. Here he discovers the Yucatan Peninsula. The Spanish will soon conquer the Mayans.

    In 1523 Hernan Cortes sent Pedro de Alvarado to conquer the Mayans in Guatemala. The Mayans fought back greatly. However, Spanish cities were later in Mayan land.

    Spanish find Mayan city
    After the Spanish conquered the Mayans they discover a Mayan city. They decide to build a city on top of the rubbish and named the new city Merida. Today Merida has museums, shops etc. and is a cultural and financial capital of the Yucatan region.

    A Spanish priest was lost in the jungle with his companions. Here they found Tikal ruins by accident. Tikal was one of the first Mayan cities, but is now in ruins.
