The colonies won their independence from Great Britain. America was not ruled by Great Britain anymore. America became an independent country. -

The Louisiana Purchase
Thomas Jefferson bought Louisiana from France. This doubled the size of the country. This also made the country go out west. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
This treaty expanded the country with the purchase of Florida. Spain gave East and West Florida to the United States. -
The Misssouri Compromise
In this compromise Missouri became a slave state. Maine became a free state. No slavery was allowed above the 36:30 line. -
Monroe Doctrine
This was written by John Adams during the Monroe presidency.This stated that European countries could no longer colonize or intervene with the Western Hemisphere. This was mostly directed to Russia , but applied to all European nations. -
Erie Canal
Started in 1817 and finished in 1825. Connected the West and the East. New York City became a fianancial center. -
Battle of San Jacinto
Sam Houston and Texas Malitia launched a surprise attack against the forces of Mexican General Santa Ana along the San Jacinto River. It was the final battle of the Texas War of Independence. -
Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears was the forced removal of the Cherokee Indians. The Cherokee Indians were removed from Georgia and moved to Oklahoma. Americans were able to expand their land and find more areas to settle into. -
Texas Statehood
Texas becomes a state . More Americans begin to settle to the West. James Polk annexes Texas. -
Mexican American War
America wants California from Mexico. Mexico declines the offer from America for California. A scrimish between Mexico and America happened. America declares a war with Mexico. -
Oregon Treaty
Oregon is prodominately American. America does not want to share Oregon with England anymore. Oregon became property of the United States. The deal was the 49 Parallel sets the Oregon Canada boundary. -
Gold is Discovered
James Marshall discoverd gold in the American River in California. He tried to keep his discoverey secret but other found out. -
Treaty of Gusdalupe
This treaty ended the American and Mexican War. Mexico gave up Texas and used the Rio Grande as America's boundary. -
Gadsden Purchase
This was treaty signed by James Gadsden. The purcahse included lands south of the Gila River and west of the Rio Grande.
