Louisiana Purchase
In1803 America bought the Louisiana Territory from France for four cents per acre. This land doubled the size of the United States. The land added fifteen new states.Thomas Jefferson sent Louis and Clark to explore it. Without the Lousiana Purchase America wouldn't be what it is today. -
Corps of Discovery Expedition
The Corps of Discovery of Lewis' and Clark's expedition of the Louisanna Territory. Their mission was to make friends with the Indians, map out the land, and to find a waterway that leads to the Pacific Ocean. They suceeded in two of the three things. They did not find a water route to the Pacific Ocean. Sacagawea was helpful by gathering food, translating, and guiding the explorers. The Corps of Discovery Expedition provided information about the new territory. -
War of 19812
The War of 1812 helped American gain a feeling of Nationalism. This war was between Great Britian and America started after America wouldn't pick a side in the war between Great Britian and France. Britian then stole American sailors and forced them to fight for them. During this war the Star Spangled Banner was written. The Battle of New Orleans occured after the war had ended and helped Andrew Jackson's reputation. Even though the War of 1812 ended in a stalemate, America was stronger. -
Florida Territory
In 1822 the United States acquired the Florida Territory from Spain. Andrew Jackson was sent to this land to stop Seminole Raiders from attacking. He didn't follow orders and took over a Spanish military posts and removed their government. Spain then signed Adams Onis Treaty allowing American to buy the land. This new territory was great addition to country. -
The Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine helped America colonize the country. It stated that no forgein powers could colonize any other territories in the western hemisphere. America threatened to fight anybody who went against this. The Moroe Doctrine was very successful and enforced for many years. -
Indian Removal Act & Trail of Tears
The Indian Removal Act was a terrible event in American history. It forced the Indians to move from their land to Oklahoma. Many Native Americans died during their long journey which became known as the Trail of Tears. The Native American endured many hardships along the way and once they arrived at the new land. Although, it was bad for the Indians, American settlers got more fertile land due to the relocation. The American government made a poor decission that affected America for years. -
Texas
After Texas declared independence from Mexico they continued to struggle. They wanted to be their own country, but couldn't make it work. The United States and Mexico fought over the land and the borders between the two nations. America annexed Texas and increase the size of the nation. -
Mexican American War and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican American War and added the Southwest Territory to the nation. This new land included what would become parts of Arizona, California, Colrado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The treaty also comprised the border of Texas to be the Rio Grande River. This Treaty not only brought peace but also increased the greatness of the country. -
Oregon Territory
America continued their westward expansion by acquiring the Oregon Territory from Britian. This helped accomplish the belief of Manafest Destiny. America and Britian both wanted this territory. America said 54 50 or they would fight, Britian didn't want to fight, so they compromised at 49 degrees lattititude. That is how America gained the Oregon Territory and it's great resources.
