France had three estates. The first two consisted of nobles, outvoting the lower third estate. Each only had one vote. The third estate summoned Louis XVI to change it. This was most important because things actually did change about the way things were ruled.

When writing the new constitution, the National Assembly decided to limit the power of the King. The National Assembly could overrule his veto. The King was appalled and fled to Austria. This was important because they limited the power of the monarchy to give themselves more say.

This is the day the constitution became in effect. INstead of the National Assembly, it was the Legislative Assembly. No members of the National Assembly could be members of the new Assembly. This was important because a constitutional monarchy was proclaimed.

Tensions between France and other countried intensified. People wanted war. Louis XVI did too, thinking other armies could easily defeat them. France declared war on Austria. This was important because the people believed they could win, and they fought for what they believed. It was unifying.

Things weren't going well for France in the war. The King was called a traitor. 20,000 people attacked the palace, but the Queen and King got away. This is important because everyone still thought it was the King's fault, and wanted revenge.

The Legislative Assembly declared France a republic. This meant that leaders were elected, ruled by the people. No more kings. This lead to Louis and Marie's trials. Both were found guily and were decapitated. This was important becuase there would be no more French monarchs.

History List Maximilien Robespierre declared himself ruler. He wanted to get rid of France's enemies. He did so by executing people. He then declared himself ruler of a new religion. Resentment occured, and he was arrested. This was important becuase over 16,000 people were guillotined.
