  • Meeting of the Generals

    Meeting of the Generals
    In May of 1789, King Louis the 16th summoned the Estate Generals of the three estates to solve a financial crisis within the French Monarchy. The three estates consists of the nobles, the clergy, and the third estate, which was the rest of the population. Fearing that the financial crisis would be forced upon them, the third estate separated from the meeting and moved to a sports facility. Within the facility the population petitioned the existing constitution and demanded a new one be written

  • The Fall of Bastille

    The Fall of Bastille
    Bastille was a prison in the French capital city of Paris, which held many political prisoners. Many Parisians saw it as a symbol relating to the Louis' Regime and was hated amongst them. Many citizens had talked of bringing down the prison and had formed a mob to do so. With the fall of the prison, King Louis the 16th recalled the royal troops stationed in the city of Paris.
  • Versailles

    Versailles
    A mob of hungry protestors consisting mostly of women marched from Paris to The Palace of Versailles. Once at the palace, the protestors had invaded the castle and demanded that the king and his family come back and live amongst the people of Paris. After the King had agreed to do so, the protestors chanted “bringing back the baker, the baker’s wife and the little baker’s apprentice!”, while coming back.
  • Varennes

    Varennes
    King Louis the 16th denounced the war and was trying to flee to the country of Austria. While escaping the monarchs were recognized in the city of Varennes and were forced back to Paris. With the denouncement of the war, an attempt to flee the country and a new constitution being implicated, the king became hated among the people.

    On September 30,1791 the new constituion was ennacted and France became a constitutional monarchy. With this the National Assembly had been turned into a new governmental body. The new body was called the Legislative Assembly and was comprised of completely new politicals. With this, France lost most of its political knowledge.

    Beginning of War
    The legislative assembly had tensions of war pushed upon them. Many hardcore monarchists along with King Louis the 16th wanted a monarchy in fear of the weaker nation after war, however many believed a new government would unite the people and the nation would become stronger. Farnce declared war with Austria on April 20th, 1792
  • Attack on Tuileries Palace

    Attack on Tuileries Palace
    King Louis the 16th was veiwed as a traitor to the country of France after attemping to flee to Austria. With Austrian soldiers advancing on French territory mobs of people attcked the Tuileries Palace. The king and Queen fled to the Legislative Assembly for protection from further violence
  • Declaration of The Republic

    Declaration of The Republic
    The Legislative assembly had just separated and have formed a new political latter called the National Convention. After the arrest of King Loius the 16th and Marie Antoinette, they were charged with multiple crimes including treason. King Louis the 16th would be hanged on September 21st and Marie Antoinette following on October 16th.

    The National convention began to be dominated by the Committee of Public Safety. One member of the Committee, Maximilen Robespierre, the leader of the Reign of Terror. From September 1793 to July 1794 as many as 15,000 citizens were guillotined consisiting of moderates, nobles, and radicals. Most of the members of the National Convention had either been killed or fled the country in fear.

    Rise of Napoleon
    After the fall of Robiespierre, a new constitution was implemented in France. With this came the formation of a new directory. From the start the directory became corrupt and tainted from radicals. In 1799 Napoleon Bonaparte returned from an expedition in Egypt and outlawed the Directory and started a governmental group called the Consulate and named himself the first Consul
