My name is Kaitlyn McShovel and I am immigrating from Ireland.
I am immigrating with my sister, Kylie. All we are able to bring to America is a few peices of our Mother's jewlery to sell for money, and a journal to record our experiences in America. I am immigrating from Ireland because we have very little money, very little food, we lost our land and our mother passed away. We are immigrating to America because we heard there are more job oppertunities, land and the oppertunity to make a new, better life for ourselves. -
Arriving at the boat
We arrived at the boat and are about to experience a whole new life in a whole new place. We were leaving for America. The boat was big and dirty. Kylie and I were not very wealthy which caused the poeple on the boat to not treat us as fairly as the wealthier people. There were a lot of poeple packed into a small space. -

Arriving at Ellis Island
When we arrived in Ellis Island we rode by the statue of liberty, It was an amazing experience that Kyle and I never thought we would have. As happy as we were to arrive in America, the trip was rough. We both got terribly sick on the boat, and the people were mean. No one was giving us any direction on what to do and where to go. Is this how our new life would be? -
Moving West
Now that we had arrived in America we had to build our new life right away and we new if we wanted to move west we would need to have money. We wanted to move west because we heard there would be more land and job oppertunities and we knew that is what we needed to make a new beginning, It took a long time for us to find work because no one wanted to hire an unhealthy, not well dressed girl like me. -
Working to move West
Kylie and I have worked hard for months to gather enough money to move west and we finally have enough. We worked as farmers for anyone we could find. We got paid very little for very hard work, but in the end it will be worth it. the journey begins. -
Hard Work, Long Journey
after a long journey we have finally arrived in the west. the first thing we needed to do was buy a horse to fight for our land. To make our new beginning we needed land and we new what we needed to do. Race. We walked for months but it would all be worth it in the end. -

After time we worked to get enough money to buy a horse for me and Kylie. We had our horses and the race was only a week away.
