Also becuse my mom passed away last year and i need to take care of my sister. We decided that we would get jobs and earn more money in America.

When my sister and I arrived in America, we got split appart for the immigrant inspection in Ellis Island, where they check the condition and information of immigrants. We then reunited and I got a job at the sweat shop. My sister got a job at the same sweatshop and we rented a boarding house shared with another family that was crowded and very small for five people.

Me and my sister bought southern land thanks to the Homestead act, an 1862 law that offered 160 acres free to anyone who agreed to live on and improve the land for five years. We planed to start a farm there. We hoped to see our father soon because we have not heard from him since we left China.
