    George Cruikshank
    A British caricaturist and book illustrator. He did illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors and reached an international audience. He is the illustrator of Oliver Twist's images which were wood engravings. He died in February 1, 1878.

    Invention of Wood Engraving
    A variety of woodcut, using relief printing, where the artist applies ink to the face of the block and prints using relatively low pressure. By contrast, ordinary engraving, like etching, uses a metal plate where the ink fills the valleys, the removed areas. As a result, wood engravings deteriorate less quickly than copper-plate. This became more popular than painting at the turn of the century and most portaits were produced in this fashion.

He escapes from there and travels to London where he meets the artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets, which is led by the elderly criminal Fagin.
