Louis XVI called the Estates General for the first time in 150 years to solve the economic crisis in France. Neckers idea was to demand larger payments from the commoners to make up for the deficit. However, the commoners were dissatisfied with this idea which started the revolution. -
The National Assembly was a revolutionary assembly formed by the Third Estate of the Estate General. The National Assembly was created when King Louis XVI refused to give the Estate General more power. An Oath taken by the French Estates General for the Third Estate, vowing “not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established.” King Louis XVI ordered the deputies of the Third Estate to disperse. A state prison on the east side of Paris, was attacked by an angry and aggressive mob of rebel Parisians. They were armed with muskets, swords, and a variety of other weapons. Seven prisoners were freed and the Bastilles gunpowder was taken.The mob stormed the Bastille in search of large quantities of ammunition's and arms. The royal fortress and prison had symbolized the tyranny of the monarch, which was why it was a major event in the French Revolution, this lead to the creation of a republic. -
On September 3rd, King Louis XVI was forced to adopt France's first written constitution. This turned the absolute monarchy into a constitutional monarchy. The National Assembly completed the constitution in the hopes that it would limit the powers of the monarch. -
The National Convention was elected to provide a new constitution for the country after the overthrow of the monarchy. After the abolishment of the monarchy, the republic of France was established. -

The reign of terror commenced with the execution of Louis XVI. The purpose of the Reign of Terror was to purge France of enemies of the Revolution and protect the country from foreign invaders. It was the most violent period of the French Revolution. Thousands of people were killed for crimes against liberty or counter revolutionary activity. The Reign Of Terror was brought to an end when Robespierre was arrested an executed. In the aftermath, the Committee of Public Safety lost its authority, prisons were emptied and the French Revolution began to quiet down.
