On July 14, 1789, the mob, joined by some of the King's soldiers, stormed the Bastille. The commander of the Bastille attempted to surrender, but the mob would not accept it. They killed him as they poured through the gates. -

The Reign of Terror
After the death of Louis XIV, the Reign of Terror began. The guillotine, a machine used for beheading people, was put to work. The Revolutionary Tribunal ordered 3,000 people in Paris to their death. Across France, 40,000 people lost their lives.
