History of the Internet.

  • The Idea

    The Idea
In the early 1900s, before the internet was created, many scientists had predicted the existence of the worldwide networks of information. One of the scientist who had the idea of a "world wireless system", was Serbian American engineer and physicist, Nikola Tesla.
  • The Birth of ARPANENT

    The Birth of ARPANENT
In 1962 during the Soviet attack on the United States, military experts as well as scientists were extremely worried about the attack on the telephone system. They had concluded that one missile could destroy all the long-distance network lines and wires. J.C.R. Licklider created the idea of the network called Advanced Research Projects Agency Net, also known as ARPANET. ARPANET was essentially made for people to access and have more effective communication.
  • The First Internet Crash

    The First Internet Crash
On October 29th, 1969, when ARPANET was first developed, student programmer from the University of California, Charley Kline, was the first person to send a message to another computer. Charley Kline had sent the message “Lo” which was supposed to be “login.” When the message “Lo” had sent, the system had crashed and therefore was known as the first internet crash.
  • The Creation of TCP/IP

    The Creation of TCP/IP
n the 1970s two DARPA (Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency) scientists, Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn created what is now known as the most popular network protocol, the TCP/IP. TCP/IP, also known as Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol was created to find other designs for ARPANET as well as helping the research for network. The TCP is responsible for collecting and organizing the bunches of data and the IP is the component for making sure all the bunches are in the right place.
  • The Birth of Email

    The Birth of Email
The first email engine was created in 1971 by American computer programmer, Raymond Tomlinson. The first email engine was called ARPANET mail and was used for contacting and communicating with friends, teachers, family members, etc. Raymond Tomlinson was the creator of having the “@” symbol split the name of the person and the person’s device. While testing this out, Raymond Tomlinson had sent himself an email saying, “something like QWERTYUIOP.”
  • The First Spam Message

    The First Spam Message
The first mentions of spamming people came from American marketer Gary Thuerk. On May 3rd,1978, Gray Thuerk the first ever spam to 393 recipients. Although, the message was harmless, many recipients were unhappy with his message. His message was a presentation by the Digital Equipment Corporation’s for promoting their products. Gray Thuerk had received thirteen million dollars for his company from this spam and had promised to never spam again as one of the receivers had voiced their complaint.
  • The Birth of Emoticons

    The Birth of Emoticons
On September 19th, 1982, Computer scientist Scott Elliott Fahlman created the first emoticon. An emoticon, also known as an emotion icon, is used for informal communication towards others when messaging. They are used to bring out how a person is feeling when texting. Sometimes a sentence may appear to be the total opposite on how one is feeling, and emoticons made it clearer to understand that person’s true emotion. The very first emoticon created by Scott Fahlman was : -)
  • The Creation of Domains

    The Creation of Domains
In 1983, American computer scientist, Paul Mockapetris, created the Domain Name System, also known as the DNS. He created this system to organize the internet. The internet was becoming complicated and the purpose of the domain names was to remember a related name to a physical IP address on the internet. Examples of domain names that are able to be seen everywhere include: .com, .ca, org, etc. On March 15th, 1985, the first domain name that was registered to the internet was Symbolics.com.
  • The Birth of NSFNET

    The Birth of NSFNET
During 1985, Irish physicist, Dennis Jennings, created and developed the National Science Foundation Network also known as the NSFNET. This network was an organized program of growing projects that were to promote more modern networking education and research that was able to share information with others. The NSFNET created fast networking to computers, which provided a basis for the internet in today’s world.
  • The First Online Game

    The First Online Game
In 1986, computer scientist Gary Tarolli was the first to create an online game. The game was called SGI Dogfight and was released to a limited network. SGI Dogfight was initially a demonstration program which was intended to illustrate evidence of the success of family advocates for helping both families and youth with a mental illness. There are three parts to the game which is flight, dog, and shadow. The objective of the game is to interact in an aircraft with other players.
  • Introduction to Malware

    Introduction to Malware
On January 19th,1986, Basit and Amjad Farooq Alvi, two brothers who owned a computer store in Pakistan had created the first malware called Brian. The introduction of the Brian virus started because the two brothers they were tired of their customers making illegal copies of the software they were selling. The purpose of Brian was to make the seven kilobytes of memory inaccessible to the disk operating system and slowed down the floppy disk drive.
  • Introduction to the First Internet Browser

Introduction to the First Internet Browser
In 1989 British computer scientist, Tim Berners-Lee, created the first browser: World Wide Web. The World Wide Web, also now known as Nexus, was an interconnected system which presented webpages that were public. It connected the world together by the way it made humans share and communicate with each other. The World Wide Web was given this name as it was written in the 1990s that it was the only way to see the web.
  • The First Search Engine

    The First Search Engine
On September 10th, 1990, postgraduate student from the university in Montreal, Alan Emtage, created the very first search engine: Archie. The search engine Archie was used by early, online journalists and different universities at the time of its first release. Archie was created as an index of FTP files also known as file transfer protocol. Archie was the first major search advance, and many people claim the engine to be overly complicated to use.
  • The Creation of HTML

    The Creation of HTML
On August 6th,1991, Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist created the HTML known as Hypertext Markup Language. This code is used to construct a web page and organize its content. HTML is important today as this is the programming humans use to create websites and allows one to learn how to code.
  • The First Published Photo

    The First Published Photo
Les Horrible Cernettes was the first photo to be posted on the internet in 1992. Right before going on stage to sing in Switzerland, Les Horribles Cernettes’ manger wanted to snap a picture of the girls and one of the members in the pop group, Lynn Veronneau published the photo which became the first photo on the internet.
  • The Creation of HTTPS

    The Creation of HTTPS
In 1995, the Netscape Communications created the HTTPS protocol. This protocol was made to convert information into a code to increase security of data transfer. The HTTPS, also known as the hypertext transfer protocol secure is the improved version of the HTTP. The HTTPS is used in modern web browsers at the top of the (Universal Resource Locators) to indicate if that webpage is secure or not. To see if the webpage is secure, you look at the URL bar at the top of the screen to see a lock.
  • Introduction to Online Banking

    Introduction to Online Banking
On May 18th,1995 American pioneer and former mayor of Buffalo, William Fargo had created the very first online bank. In the early 1980s, there were already experiments with online banking, but the idea did not become popular until the rise of the internet.
