    King David was the second king of Israel. He was annointed by Elijah. He fell out of God's favor and he designed the first Temple.
  • King Solomon 928 BCE

    Solomon, David's son, was the third king of Israel. He created the Temple in which the Ark of the Covenant was housed. Solomon, unfortuantely, made some bad decisions and created idols of his wives as they were not all Hebrew. God became so enraged at this that he allowed discord to happen in the nation. This split lead to two new nations being created. Israel was the northern nation, consisting of the ten northern tribes. The other nation was known as Judah. They claimed possesion of Jerusalem.

    The Assyrians(722 BCE)
    Around 722 BCE, the Assyrians took overtook the Northern Kingdom and exiled many of the Jews. This was the end of the nation of Israel. This is important to the Jewish people because the exile forced them to live with the Gentiles. Jesus a prophet in the Jewish religion came from among the Gentiles.

    Ezra was a preist and a scribe. He set the precendent of reading the Torah scrolls in a public square.
  • Hasmonean Family

    Hasmonean Family
    The Hasmoneans also known as the Macabees took over the kingdom and made themselves kings. Under them three sects of Jews were created: The Saducees, the Pharisees, and the Essenes. The Essenes broke away from traditional Judaism.
  • The Romans 63 BCE

    The Romans 63 BCE
    Once again the Land of Israel was under another conquest. In 66 BCE the Jews attempted another revolt. Unfortantely for the Jews, the Romans crushed their rebellion. The Romans completely destroyed the Second Temple, including the parts the were rebuilt after the macabee revolt. Sacrafice was not used again and the idea of priesthood stoped. Another aspect of Modern Judahism was added to the religion: rabbinic Judaismn, prayer, study, and scriptural interpretation are born.

    The Babylonians 586 BCE
    King Nebuchabnezzar ruler of the Babylonian empire invaded the Southern Kingdom of Judah. He and his armies destroyed the First Temple in Jerusalem. The Babylonians were less severe than the Assyrians and let the Jewish people practice their religion. This time period is where the modern Jewish religion originates because under foreign rule their religion evolved and new ideas of prayer and worship based on the reading of a sacred text emerged.

    The Persians 536 BCE
    King cyrus of Babylon allowed the Jewish people to return to their native Judah. However, many stayed in Babylon. The ones that returned to Jerusalem rebuilt the Temple. This one of course being the second. The returned Judahites resumed the practice of animal sacrifice. Along with the Temple a synagogue was built. The Synagogue became a very important place for the Jewish because this was the place the Torah was mainly read to the public.

    The greeks 332 BCE
    Alexander the great defeated the Persian Empire. He allowed the Jews to freely worship their religion, that was until King Antiochus restricted the practice of the Jewish religion. In an effort to reclaim their independence, the jewish people started a revolt. This revolt was led by the Macabees,from the HasmoneanFamily. The Greeks defiled the Sexond Temple with their gods and parts were destroyed in the revolt. After a victory, the Jewish people rebuilt the second Temple and rededicated it to G

    1st Rebellion against the Romans 66-70 CE
    They jews first wanted to overthrow the Roamns for the tax they imposed. Then the Romans took over the role of High preist in the Temple. Emporer Caligula decalered himslef a deity and threatened to massacre anyone who refused to see him as such. Caligula died a sudden death.
