Hero's Journey Project

  • Subway Hero Video

    Subway Hero Video
We watched a video about Wesley Autrey, the man who risked his life by hopping onto a subway track with an oncoming train in order to save a stranger having a seizure. He exemplifies the type of hero that disregards personal safety in order to help another. This is one of my previous definitions of a hero, so it did not impact my view of a hero.
  • Hero Prewrite

We brainstormed ideas of our ideas of heroes and who our childhood heroes were. I believed that heroes all sacrifice something(time, life, etc.) in order to benefit others.

  • Why Courage Matters

    Why Courage Matters
An excerpt from John McCain's book details the heroic deeds of Roy Benevidez, a man that risked his life multiple times to save eight of his wounded comrades from the clutches of the Vietmanese army. He sustained several life-threatening wounds and injuries, but kept on persevering and did not stop to rest until everything was finished. He represents the hero that disregards all personal safety in order to save comrades in peril. I added perseverance to the list of qualities of a hero.
  • Interview: Kristi Quillen, Peace Corps Volunteer

In class, we watched the interview of Kristi Quillen, a past student. She went to South America to volunteer to teach English to a group of kids. She is a hero, because she sacrifrices the comfortablilty of home in order to benefit the world. This led me to revise my definition as a hero. A hero does not need to be some famous person; he/she can be someone that influences others positively.
  • Deciding My Hero

    Deciding My Hero
We were in the library today, and I have decided on Sir Isaac Newton as my hero, because he contributed much knowledge to what is known as modern science.
  • "Change the World" Power Point Day 1

We discussed many categories of heroes and who would be an example of each and characteristics of each category(Chalktalk on hero qualities). We also saw the cases of Tuesday Muse, Hudson Plaskoff, and two friends in Haiti who are everyday people who raise money for those in need.
  • "Change the World" Power Point Day 2

We watched Year of the Rat by the Badly Drawn Boy, which showed how compassion and understanding to those that are irrational can calm them down if you don't give up. We also watched Waiting on the world to Change by John Mayer, which ridicules how we are the people that need to start the change, but we are waiting for change to happen. Another video we saw is All We Need to Do by Hugh Laurie, who comically pokes fun at what we need to do to change the world.
  • "Change the World" Power Point Day 3

We concluded our Change the World presentation by listening to We Are the Youth of Today by Amy MacDonald, who defines the youth of our generation, and watching the unique poem Lost Generation, which at first sounds depressing and vacant, but when said backwards, portrays hope and promise.
  • 1st Blog Post Due: How I chose My Subject

I wrote my paragraph on posterous, explaining why I believed Isaac Newton is such a crucial influence on modern science.
  • 2nd Blog Post due: Heroes in Literature

After much contemplating, I wrote my paper about who my heroes were, the qualities of a hero, and important literary heroes.
  • First Chapter Monday

I shared an excerpt from my book detailing Isaac Newton's life. Though his mom try to dissuade Isaac out of pursuing a college education, Isaac persevered and caused trouble until his mom gave up.
