Hero Project

  • Free Write About Heroes

    Free Write About Heroes
Today we wrote about our first impressions on heroes. My personal definition of what it means to be a hero is someone who risks their well-being for others. An example of this would be the men and women volunteering for Doctors Without Borders (MSF). They are all volunteers working to bring good medical care to poorer parts of the world where sanitary medicine is not usually available.
  • Subway Hero

    Subway Hero
Today, besides writing about heroes we also saw an interview with Wesley Autrey, a man painted by the media as a hero. He saved a man's life from an upcoming subway train. His actions were indeed heroic, but only to a single person.
  • Roy Benavidez

    Roy Benavidez
Today we read about Roy Benavidez, a man who saved many lives in the Vietnam War. His actions in the war caused great harm to himself, yet saved the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. His actions were very heroic, and he deserves the best honor any man could receive.
  • Interview with Kristi Quillen from Peace Corps

Interview with Kristi Quillen from Peace Corps
The interview with Kristi was refreshing to see. She seemed like she was genuinely happy helping out in Costa Rica. Her actions are very generous, not quite as heroic in my opinion, but nevertheless very noble of her.
  • Heroes in Literature

    Heroes in Literature
Reading about heroes in literature helped me view them in a different perspective. There isn't a set definition of a hero, especially not through an author's eye. I believe the characters designed in the stories are the heroes of the world they live in.
  • Choosing My Hero

    Choosing My Hero
I decided to choose Alan Turing as my hero. He helped shape the world of computers as we know it today, without him computers would probably be nothing more than math solving machines. He has been a great contribution to the world of math and computers.
  • Change the World PowerPoint - Part 1

I wasn't here this day, but I believe we took notes on different types of heroes.
  • Change the World Power Point - Part 2

Change the World Power Point - Part 2
Today we saw a few music videos and a commercial. They all featured a different way of viewing the world and how things should change. The John Mayer song gave an example of how the world would not change if everyone just waited for someone else to change the world. The Liberty Mutual advertisement showed how in an ideal society, everyone would be helpful and respectful of each other by being eager to help and willing to change.
  • Change the World Power Point - Part 3

Change the World Power Point - Part 3
Today we watched the "We are the Youth of Today" video. Some of the clips in the video I disagreed with as being reasonable to depend on the future generations to fix. In a way, it seemed like the video was almost blaming the older generations and acting like the younger generation was there to fix everything. In other ways, it gave hope for a brighter future if new innovative techniques are developed to help combat the world's problems.
  • Sharing Something From Our Biographies

    Sharing Something From Our Biographies
I was going to share a passage from Andrew Hodges' wonderful biography on Alan Turing about his struggles with being seen as a respectable mathematician for being so interested in computers. "Max Newman made this immortal statement that 'there is nothing to do with computers that merits a Ph.D.'"
