Hernan Cortez was a spanish conquistador born on December 2, 1485. He was born in Medellín, Spain. Hernan is the son of Martin Cortes and Catalina Pizarro Altamirano.

At the age of fourteen (1499) his parents sent him away to university of Salamanca. That is in Spain. The university was founded in 1218.

In 1501 Cortes dropped out of the university of Salamanca. This was because he failed his law studies. He was 16 years old.

In 1504 he went on a voyage to the new world. The voyage was originally in 1492. It was first sailed by Christopher columbus.

In 1511 Hernan cortes was promoted as a head official of the governor. The new governor was Diego Valasquez. This all took place in Cuba

In 1518 Cortes was sent to mexico by Diego Valasquez. This was because he was named head of an expedition to mexico. However, a fight took place and his status was revoked.

In 1519 Hernan take Montezuma Hostage. Aztec's were trying to please him with gold and other items. However he didn’t trust the Aztecs so he took Montezuma hostage.

In 1520 Cortes killed Montezuma. Montezuma couldn’t get the Aztecs to accept Hernan as their leader. By the time that had happened he already killed all of montezuma.

In 1521 Hernan Cortes takes over the entire Aztec Empire. Once montezuma was dead the Empire couldn’t back out of Him being the leader. The Aztec Empire will come to an end.

The king of Spain sent rulers of other places to go help Hernan Cortes. While the rulers were becoming ill, Cortes was accused of poisoning them. After being accused he was forced into retiring in his estate.

Hernan cortes died December 2, 1547. He was 62 years old. Castilleja de la Cuesta, Spain is the place of death. Cortes died from pleurisy.
