  • 490 BCE

    The Persian Wars

    The Persians tried to conquer Greece 3 times but ultimately failed. The Persian Empire wanted their revenge after the Athenians helped their colonies residing in the specifically in Anatolia, rebel against Persian rule. Darius put down the revolt and vowed to defeat Athens.
  • Period: 479 BCE to 431 BCE

    Golden Age of Athens

    Athens became very wealthy and powerful as the leader of the Delian League after the Persian Wars. Athens economic prosperity led to the Golden Age of culture and democracy. Pericles was the leader of Athens during the Golden Age, he increased democracy, created the strongest navy and made Athens beautiful, including the building of the Parthenon.
  • 431 BCE

    Peloponnesian War

    Athens became too powerful as leader of the Delian League. It built a powerful and trading empire. Some of the Greek city-states want to leave the Delian League now that the Persian threat is gone, and many resent the harsh Delian League membership fees. Athens punishes the city-states with Athenian citizens, and finally taking the conquered Greeks as slaves. Sparta creates the Peloponnesian League to counter the Delian League.
  • Period: 323 BCE to 31

    Hellenism

    Alexander's empire combined the knowledge of 4 great empires, Greece, Persia, Egypt and India. He created Hellenistic culture. Egypt was the city of knowledge many mathematicians, scientists and philosophers studied at Alexandria.
