  • 750 BCE

    The Iliad and the Odyssey

    The Iliad and the Odyssey
    The Iliad and the Odyssey were both created by a blind poet, Homer. The Iliad explains the events in Troy. The king's wife was taken by the Trojans. The Greeks created a huge wooden horse, the Trojans thought it was a gift from the gods so they brought it into the city. When they brought it in the Greeks came out of the horse, attacked the city, and got their princess. The Odyssey was the sequel, and it was about Odysseus going through a 10 year, dangerous journey back home to Ithaca.

    The Persian War

    The Persian Empire was an enormous empire, yet they failed three times to conquer Greece. The war started by Athenians helping a city disband from the Persian Empire. The first battle was the Battle of Marathon, the Greeks had won by using a phalanx formation. The second battle was the Battle of Thermopylae, which the Persians had won after a Greek traitor told them a secret passage. The Battle of Salamis was the last battle at sea, the Greeks won this battle. Greece won the Persian Wars.
  • Period: 479 BCE to 431 BCE

    The Golden Age of Athens

    When the Persian War was over, Athens became more wealthy and powerful, that is why it was called the Golden Age. The significance of the Golden Age was that Athens was able to create new ideas for them including sculptures, theatres, philosophy, and democracy, they were developed over time. Classical art was also significant in Athens, it portrayed an ideal standard for the people. The people in the sculptures would always be fit, young, symmetrical, and mostly nude.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    The Peloponnesian War

    Athens had there own league called the Delian League, they were too powerful. Some city-states didn't like Athens because of the harsh fees they had to pay. Athens took over those city-states and forced them to become slaves. Sparta also didn't like the Delian League so they created the Peloponnesian League. During the war Athens encounters a plague that wiped out 1/3 of the population. In the end of the war Sparta had won.
