  • Period: 499 BCE to 449 BCE

    Persian War

    At 499-449 BCE, the Persian Empire tried to conquer Greece 3 times, but failed. After Athenians helped one of their colonies, they wanted to revenge. Darius vowed to defeat Athens.The first battle in Marathon, Athens won.The second Battle in Thermopylae, Persian empire won. Finally the third battle in Salamis, Greeks won.
    The significance of the Persian War is that it saved Greek culture from Persians and provided a stepping stone to its golden age.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    Peloponnesian War

    At 431 BCE, Athens became too powerful and be the leader of Delian League. On the other hand, Sparta creates the Peloponnesian League to counter the Delian League. However, Athens undergoes a plague. Sparta won the war.
    The significance of the Peloponnesian War is that Athens leaned and became a cultural center, not a political and economic center of Greece. However the war was a cause of declination of Greece.
  • 336 BCE

    The Death of Phillip the II of Macedonia

    At Phillip the II of Macedonia's daughter’s wedding in 336 B.C, he
    died by a former guardsman. Philip’s son Alexander immediately proclaimed himself king of Macedonia. Alexander became king of Macedonia at age 20.
    The significance is that it opened the age of Alexander. Because of his accomplishments, he became known as Alexander the Great.
  • 331 BCE

    Alexander conquered Persian Empire

    Alexander the Great had two wars with Darius III of Persia. One was the Battle of Issus occurred in southern Anatolia in 333 BCE. In the second battle of Gaugamela in 331 BCE, he conquered Persia with his epochal tactics.
    The significance of this conquer is that Persian Kingdom was destroyed in 331 BCE, and Alexander the Great ruled over all Persian control.
