    the persian wars

    the Persian wars were caused by the Persian empire trying to conquer Greece. after they failed, they wanted revenge and Darius vowed to defeat Athens. then the battle of marathon, Thermopylae, and salamis occurred. the Greeks ended up winning the Persian wars due to incredibly strong navy. due to the victory Greece had become very wealthy and powerful. the significance is Greece used the phalanx formation and outsmarted the Persians. the city-states all worked together and defeated them.

    Golden Age

    The Golden Age is a period in when Athens became very wealthy and powerful after Persian Wars. the leader of Athens during this time was Pericles. he increased democracy, created strongest navy, and made Parthenon. classical arts and theater flowered during this time. The Greeks invented genres of tragedy and comedy. this occurred between Persian and Peloponnesian wars. there were also the columns Doric, ionic,and, Corinthian. art portrayed harmony, balance, and proportion of Athenians.

    peloponnesian war

    the peloponnesian war was when Athens became too powerful and built a powerful navy. Greek city states wanted to leave the deli-an league, but Athens punishes all city states that choose to leave. Sparta creates the peloponnesian war toward deli-an league. Pericles creates city wall for protection. Athens then undergoes a plague and their population died. Sparta then wins the war, both city states are weakened and Philip the ii conquers Greece. Thucydides wrote about the war and made a book.

    hellenism

    Hellenism was when Alexanders empire combined the cultures of Greece, Persia, Egypt, and India. this created a new culture( Hellenistic). Alexandra, Egypt was the most important city for many years, many scientists and philosophers studied there. the museum has galleries and libraries. Hellenistic art portrayed realism, movement, and emotions. the figures were very different then most art. they were more realistic and and showed more emotion than other sculptures used in classical art.
