    Persian War

    This war started because the Persian Empire desired revenge on Greece because they helped a colony rebel and wanted to expand their rule.The Battle of Marathon was first to take place and Greece demonstrated the phalanx formation. The Battle of Thermopylae was won by Greece. The Battle of Salamis wasn’t fought on land, but in the sea. The Greek won! Persia wasn’t a threat anymore and leads to an age of wealth and power, leading to the formation of the Delian League and the Golden Age.

    Golden Age

    After winning the war, Athens was new to their wealth and power. Their economy was thriving and as a result they valued the arts. This included sculptures, columns, philosophy, theater, and ways of glorifying Athens, like the building of the Parthenon. The Delian League was formed as protection from Persia and was lead by the powerful Athens. The Golden Age allowed for Athens to strengthen their navy and increased democracy which gave them advantages, but left neighboring city states threatened.

    Peloponnesian War

    The Peloponnesian War was between Athens and Sparta. This occurred because the Delian League became too powerful and the other city states were unhappy giving their military or taxes to them. If those who were under the Delian League’s rule desired to leave, they would then be conquered. This was unacceptable, so Sparta created the Peloponnesian league. Two years into the war, Athens gets a plague that kills a third of their population and weakens them. This causes Sparta to defeat Athens.

    The Rule of Alexander the Great

    Alexander the great was the son of King Philip the II. He was able to do something Persia was never able to do, conquer Greece. In addition, he conquered Persia, Egypt, and India. Hellenism was a mixture of influences of Greece and Eastern concepts. Alexander was accomplished until he died at the age of 20. The Hellenistic culture brought knowledge and great thinkers like, mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers. At the time,art consisted of realism and less perfect sculptures.
