    Economic troubles

    France's economy was in decline. This caused alarm, many people faced starvation.

    Election of The National Assembly

    King ordered the Estates-General to follow the medieval rules. Emmanuel-Joseph Sieyès suggested that the Third Estates delegates name themselves the National Assembly and pass the laws, the delegates of the Third Estate agreed to Sieyès's idea and voted to establish the National Assembly for the end of absolute monarchy and beginning of representative government.

    Tennis Court Oath

    Three days later of election of National Assembly, the Third Estate delegated broke down a door of meeting room which was locked out to an indoor tennis court, pledging to stay until they had drawn up a new constitution. This pledge became known as the Tennis Court Oath.

    Storming the Bastille

    In Paris, rumors flew, because of that people began to gather weapons in order to defend the city against attack, On July 14, a mob searching for gunpowder and arms stormed the bastille. Attackers hacked the prison commander and several guards to death.

    The Rights of Man

    The National Assembly adopted a statement of revolutionary ideals, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. The document state that "men are born and remain free and equal in rights."

    A Limited Monarchy

    The National Assembly completed the new constitution, which Louis reluctantly approved. The constitution created a limited constitutional monarchy. It stripped the king of much hof his authority, created a new legislative body Legislative Assembly.

    France at War

    The war began badly for the French because Prussian forces were advancing on Paris. On August 10, about 20,000 men and women invaded the Tuileries, the palace where the royal family was staying. The mob massacred the royal guards and imprisoned king, queen and their children.

    The former king walked with calm dignity up the steps of the scaffold to be beheaded by machine called the guillotine.

    End of the Terror

    Some members of the National Convention turned on Robespierre. They demanded his arrest and execution. The Reign of Terror, the radical phase of the French Revolution, ended on July 28, 1794,when Robespierre went to the guillotine.
