    France Under Ancien Régime

    France was under a citizen classification system called the Ancien Régime. It included first, second, and third estates, and the first and second estates were very powerful, on the other hand, the third estate was very powerless. It started c. 15th century, and ended in 1789.

    Increase in Price of Bread

    The price of bread increased by a lot, which was the main source of food for the French people, because of bad weather that caused the crops to die and have a lack of food.

    Decline of Economy in France

    In the 1780s, the economy of France, which was one of the best economies in the world, started to decline because there were taxes for everything for the 3rd estate members, such as bread, and even things like salt. They were the only ones that paid taxes, except the few percentages the 2nd estate members pay. Also, Louis XVI of France spent a lot of money for the colonists to win British America because British America was their rival. This nearly doubled their debt.

    This event was a meeting of an assembly that included representatives of all estates, led by the Second Estate.

  • National Assembly Founded

    In this day, some people in the 3rd estate with revolutionary ideas decided to inform the government that they are going to be the national assembly and they are also going to have rights.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    Some 3rd estate delegates found out that they were locked in the room, they broke out of the room, and pledged that they will never break, and stay together until the kingdom is re-established.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    The citizens heard a rumor that the king is going to get rid of the national assembly with the army, so they started to gather weapons in order to fight against the government.

    This is a time when the peasants were in great fear because of rumors that said that the nobles were going to terrorize the peasants. Because of that, some armed peasants attacked the houses of nobles.
