French Revolution Timeline

  • May 5, 1789 meeting with the Estates-General

    Assembly composed to three estates- the clergy, nobillity and commoners; Had the power to decide on the levying of new taxes and to undertake reforms in the country. The opening also marked the start of The French Revolution.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    On June 20, 1789, the members of the French Third Estate took the Tennis Court Oath in the tennis court which ahd been built in 1686 for the use of the Palace of Versailles. They had it there because they found themsleves locked out of their usual meeting hall and thinking that the king was forcing them to disband. They took the oath to never spereate until a written constitution established for france.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    The storming of Bastille occured in Paris, France, on july 14 1789, when revolutionary insurgents attempted to storm and sieze control of the medieval armoury, fortress and political prison know as the Bastille.
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man

    The delceration of the rights of man and the citizen, set by Frances National Constituent Assembly in 1789, is a human civil rights document from the French Revolution.

    The Womans March on Versailles, also known as the October March, the October Days, or simply the March on events of the French Revolution.
  • Execution of King Louis XVI

    Louis XVI, former king of France since the abolition of the monarchy, was publicly executd on January 21, 1793, during the French Revolution at the Place de la Révolution in Paris.
  • Maximillian Robespierre's execution

    on July 27, 1794 Robespierre and a number of his followers were arrested at the Hotel de Ville in Paris, the next day Robespierre and 21 of his followers were taken to the place del la révolution wehre they were executed by guillotine before a cheering crowd.

    The Reign of Terror was a period of the French Revolution when, following the creation of the First Republic, a series of massacres and numerous public executions took place in response to revolutionary fevour, anticlerical sentiment, and accusations of treason by the committee of public safety.
  • Napoleonic Code is established

    March 21, 1804 the resulting Civil Code of France marked the first major revision and reorganization of laws since the Roman era. The civil code adressed mainly matters relating to the property and families.

    Napoleon was crowned emperor of the french on Sunday, December 2, 1804 at Notre-Damw de Paris in Paris. It marked the instantiation of the modern empire.

    The Peninsular War was the military conflict fought in the Iberian Peninsula by Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom against the invading and occupying forces of the first French Empire and during the Napoleonic Wars. In Spain, it is considered to overlap with the Spanish war of independence.
  • Napoleon and his men march on Russia

    June 24, 1812 the Grande Armée led by the French Emperor Napolean Bonaparte, crossed by the Neman River, invading Russia from present day poland. The result was a disaster for the French. The russian army refused to engage with Napoleons Grande Armée of more then 500,000 European troops.
  • Napoleon is exiled to Elba

    Napoleon Bonaparte the emperor of France, one of the greatest millitary leaders in history, abdicates the throne, and in the Treaty of Fontainblueau, is banished to the Mediterranean island of Elba.
