France was in a great crisis of starvation and debt, so King Louis XVI held an Estates-General meeting to propose solutions. The wealth was mainly concentrated in the top 2% which made 2 Estates while the bottom 98% made 1 Estate. In the meeting, they discussed increasing taxes mainly which the burden was on the bottom 98%. So they voted and the top two estates made the decision even with 2% representation.
This is important as it incited rebellion among the French people. -
After the General Estates Meeting, and the Third Estate was very mad, they all met up in a tennis court. In the tennis court is where they founded the National Assembly. The National Assembly would later go on to set many foundational rights for the French people.
This is very important as it was the first big opposition against the king. -
In order to rebel against the French monarchy, they needed arms and ammunition to rebel a tyrannical government. A prison fortress, named the Bastille, with many arms was in the attention of the French commoners. So on July 14 of 1789, the third estate of commoners stormed the Bastille and successfully freed 7 prisoners and got lots of arms and ammunitions.
This was in great necessity of the French people to put its foot in the ground and arm itself against the government. -
National Assembly makes a constitution named the Declaration of the Rights of Man. This stated that all men are created equal and were gifted liberties of property and resistance to tyranny. This was in part drafted by Thomas Jefferson and Lafayette.
The importance of the Declaration of the Rights of Man was to give the people individual liberties and the right to stand up against their rule. -
King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette tries to escape the political turmoil in Paris to go to Montmedy which had soldiers to protect them. They disguised themselves as normal people to escape. Louis XVI is recognized in Varennes and they are sent back to Paris.
This is important as it makes people distrust and more paranoid of the king. -
At Champ De Mars in Paris, republican advocates made a petition to dethrone the king. While getting massive support, the national guard was not in support of it. After the national guard killed two people due to foolish reasons, the protesters retaliated by throwing stones at the guards. The guards opened fire and murdered a bunch of the protesters.
The importance of this is to show the extent of the crown to keep its power. -
After the Champ de Mars Massacre, other European countries were concerned of the French Revolutionists taking Louis XVI's throne and maybe theirs as well. So in accordance, the European countries would go to war with France if King Louis XVI was threatened of his power. This strengthened bonds between King Louis XVI and other European countries.
This is important as it made the National Assembly want to go in war against Austria and other European powers. -
The guillotine was invented as a less torturous form of murder. This form of execution was used to kill an estimated number of 17,000 people. This was beginning of the Reign of Terror.
This was important as this form of execution started becoming very popular around France. -
The National Convention convicted King Louis XVI of treason and sentenced him to murder. They were left without a leader until 1799. This was important because it marked the height of the revolution and finally took down the ruling monarchy in France. -
Napoleon grew to rise power as a smart powerful military general. He became first consul of France in 1799. Napoleon later declared himself emperor in 1804.
This was important because it is very ironic how the French Revolution fought against absolute rulers when Napoleon eventually become an emperor.
