They did this because of the unbalance in all aspects of the French hierarchy in society. In France at the time, The clergy and nobles had many privileges although they did not pay tax. Many of the feudal lords, were killed or fled to save their lives because the old system was overthrown. -

During this time France had no leader in charge, and so again there was a fight for power which resulted in violence and death. This was between Girardin and Jacobins, moderate republicans against the radical republicans. Nearly 500,000 people from both sides were executed because of the rivalry.

The coup of Brumaire is considered the end of the French revolution. The directors who led France till this point became corrupt and depended too much on the military. The coup led to the setting up of a consul led by the military leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, along with two other consuls.
