On June 20th 1789, this is when the king declared activities of the third estate illegal, and refused to recognize the National Assembly. Meeting at the indoor tennis court at Versailles, the Third Estate promised not to separate until a constitution had been written by France.

On July 14th, 1789, the Bastille was a medieval fortress of 8 towers. This is where criminals were housed. If the criminals were released, they were instructed not to reveal anything they had seen, or experienced at in the prison. But the secrecy made it a focus of the anger of the Parisian mob.
