    Cause 4 of the French Revolution
    France was divided into three estates or social classes. 1rst estate is the clergy. 2nd estate is nobility, the first two estates had the most money. The 3rd estate were the commoners, and were the poorest people. The 3rd estate paid all the taxes, even thought they had no money. the 1rst and 2nd paid no takes when they had all the money.     French people were hearing from the Enlightenment philosophers that the king's power should be limited, people should have rights and freedoms, the king is breaking social contract, and that the French people should revolt. (French Revolution notes)

    Prior to the revolution, France experianced sever droughts. This caused food shortages and prices to go up. (French Revolution notes)

  • Formation of the National Assembly

    Formation of the National Assembly
    The 1st and 2nd estate outvoted the 3rd estate on who should pay taxes. 3rd estate representitives stormed out of the meeting and decided to form their own parliament called the "National Assembly" and it would represent the French people. (French Revolution notes)

    National Assembly was forced to meet at a nearby tennis court, they planned to create a document. The document was called the Declaration of Rights of Man. (French Revolution notes)

    King Louis 16th Responds
    As the National Assembly kept working on the D.R.M, the king was not very happy. King Louis had his army surround Paris, the people of Paris freaked out and quickly formed local militias. The people had plenty of guns but not enough gun powder. (French Revolution notes)

    The city of Paris had their gun powder supply at a local fort/prison called the Bastille, thousands of Parisians attacked the Bastille and got the gun powder. While all of this was happening, King Louis was on a hunting trip. (French Revolution notes)

    Thousand of women from Paris marched 12 miles from Paris to the Palace of Versaille. They were armed with broomsticks, lances, pitchforks, swords, pistols, and muskets. They wanted food and for the king to sign the D.R.M

    The thousands of women who broke through the gates and slaughtered the gaurds, captured King Louis and Marie Antoinette and forced them to sign the D.R.M. All the food in Versailles and the king and queen were brought back to Paris. The royal family would never see Versailles again. (French Revolution notes)

    The revolution had been going on for about 2 years and the royal family was under house arrest in their palace in Paris. The National Assembly kept making the king sign more and more laws that took away more of his power. One night the king and his family got in their royal carriage and tried to head to Austria. They made it to the Austrian border until they were spotted and brought back to Paris. (French Revolution notes)
  • Death of King Louis XVI

    Death of King Louis XVI
    King Louis XVI was beheaded, and as a result Austria, Prussia, Spain, Portugal, Britain, and the Dutch Republic declared war on France and invaded. If France lost the revolution would be over and the monarchy would be restored. (French Revolution Notes)
  • Reign of Terror

    Reign of Terror
    When the war started the French army started to lose and the Austrian/Prussian army got within 30 miles of Paris, Great Britain also put a naval blockade on France's port. The nastional Assembly started killing anyone was against the revolution. 40,000 people, including Marie Anoinette, were sent to the guillotine. The reign of terror ends when Maximillien Robespierre is sent to guillotine. (French Revolution notes)

    Its the end of the monarchy, the church lost most of its power, people have rights and freedoms, and France no longer has 3 estates, The 3rd estate gained alot, the 1st and 2nd lost everything. (French Revolution notes)
